Ingredients
- 4 cups sparkling water or club soda (for a non-alcoholic base)
- 2 cups white cranberry juice (adds a frosty, tart sweetness)
- 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (about 3 large oranges)
- 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice (about 2 lemons)
- 1/2 cup simple syrup (adjust to taste; see tips for substitutions)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 4 whole cloves
- 1 cup vodka or gin (optional, for an adult version)
- 1 cup fresh cranberries (for garnish and a pop of color)
- Orange and lemon slices (for garnish)
- Fresh rosemary sprigs (adds a lovely piney aroma)
If you’d like to keep this punch alcohol-free, simply omit the vodka or gin and add more sparkling water. For a vegan-friendly simple syrup, you can substitute honey with agave nectar or maple syrup, which I often do when cooking with Olivia and Isabella around—they love helping me mix up the syrup!
Instructions
- Start by preparing your simple syrup: combine 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely, then remove from heat and let cool. This is a great step to do ahead of time, especially if you’re juggling holiday prep like I often do with my daughters.
- In a large punch bowl, combine the white cranberry juice, freshly squeezed orange juice, fresh lemon juice, and the cooled simple syrup. Stir gently to blend the flavors.
- Add the ground cinnamon and whole cloves to the mixture. Let it steep for about 10 minutes—this step brings out the warm spice notes, very much like the cozy aromas that filled my grandmother’s kitchen during Christmas.
- Remove the cloves using a slotted spoon or strain the punch through a fine sieve to avoid any surprises in the glass.
- If using alcohol, slowly stir in the vodka or gin now. This is when the punch transforms into a festive adult treat, perfect for a midnight toast.
- Just before serving, gently fold in the sparkling water or club soda to add that refreshing fizz. I always remind my daughters to be gentle here to keep the bubbles lively!
- Float fresh cranberries, orange slices, lemon slices, and rosemary sprigs on top for a beautiful presentation that guests can admire before the first sip.
- Serve immediately over ice in festive glasses, and watch the smiles appear.
Whenever I make this punch, I think back to the bustling kitchen of my childhood, where each ingredient told a story and every gathering was a celebration of love. It’s a simple recipe, but one that carries the heart of tradition and joy.
