Learn how to make delicious Healthy Slow Cooker Orange Chicken. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs (you can use chicken breasts for a leaner option)
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice (about 23 medium oranges)
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest (grated from about 2 oranges)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 2 tablespoons honey or pure maple syrup (adjust based on sweetness preference)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger (optional, but adds a lovely warmth)
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for a subtle kick)
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch or arrowroot powder (to thicken sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons cold water (for cornstarch slurry)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro or parsley (for garnish)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil (for browning chicken, optional)

Instructions

  1. Start by trimming any excess fat from the chicken thighs. If you want, lightly season them with salt and pepper. I often let my daughters Olivia and Isabella help with this part—it’s a small kitchen tradition that always makes our cooking time feel more like family time.
  2. If you prefer a bit of extra depth and color, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and quickly brown the chicken thighs for 2-3 minutes on each side. This step is optional but brings out a beautiful caramelized flavor that makes the final dish even more comforting.
  3. Transfer the chicken to your slow cooker. In a separate bowl, whisk together the fresh orange juice, orange zest, minced garlic, soy sauce, honey, vinegar, grated ginger, and red pepper flakes. This sauce is where the magic happens—bright, sweet, and just a little spicy, like a hug in liquid form.
  4. Pour the sauce over the chicken, making sure every piece is coated well. Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or on high for 2-3 hours. The slow cooker will work its gentle magic, infusing the chicken with those vibrant flavors and making it tender enough to fall apart with a fork.
  5. About 30 minutes before serving, mix the cornstarch and cold water to create a slurry. Stir this into the slow cooker to thicken the sauce. Switch the slow cooker to high heat for the remaining time to help the sauce reduce and become glossy.
  6. Before serving, taste and adjust seasoning if needed. I often add a little extra fresh orange zest or a squeeze of lemon juice to brighten it up even more.
  7. Garnish with chopped cilantro or parsley for a fresh, herbaceous finish. Serve hot, and watch your family enjoy every bite.
