Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pre-made pizza crust (or homemade, if you prefer)
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a bit of heat)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Feel free to substitute the mozzarella with a cheese of your choice, like cheddar for a sharper bite, or add some sautéed mushrooms for an earthy touch. The key is to keep it simple and let the flavors shine through, much like the recipes passed down through generations in my family.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 450°F. If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat as well.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and cooked through, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
- Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage, stirring for about 1 minute until the flour is absorbed.
- Gradually add the milk, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens into a creamy gravy, about 4-5 minutes. Season with black pepper and cayenne, if using.
- Brush the pizza crust with olive oil, then spread the sausage gravy evenly over the crust.
- Sprinkle the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses over the top.
- Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before garnishing with chopped chives.
- Slice and serve warm, enjoying the comforting flavors of a breakfast pizza that feels like a warm hug from Nonna Rosa herself.
