Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
- A few drops of red food coloring (optional, to create a festive swirl)
- Extra powdered sugar for dusting
Feel free to substitute the peppermint extract with vanilla if you prefer a milder flavor. The red food coloring is optional, but it adds a charming holiday touch, reminiscent of the candy canes we used to hang on our family tree.
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the powdered sugar and sweetened condensed milk. Stir until a dough forms.
- Add the peppermint extract and continue to mix until the flavor is evenly distributed.
- If using, drop a few drops of red food coloring into the dough and gently knead it to create a marbled effect.
- Dust your work surface with powdered sugar and roll the dough into small balls, each about the size of a marble.
- Flatten each ball gently with a fork to create the classic peppermint shape.
- Allow the candies to dry at room temperature for a few hours until they are firm to the touch.
A tip from Nonna Rosa: Let the kids help with the rolling and flattening. It’s a wonderful way to pass down family traditions and create lasting memories, just as she did with me in her bustling kitchen.
